私は海外でのパーミットは釣って来たけど、日本での経験はない。日本のパーミットも必ず自分の手中に落としてみせる！かなりの意気込みを胸に、OLURICAの松本さんのご協力を得て、沖縄諸島の扉をノックした。狙いはパーミットのみ。

しかし！そこに待ち受けていたのは、自分のフラッツフィッシング史上最悪の天候だった。全日が暴風雨、バケツをひっくり返したような大雨が頻繁に襲ってくる。それも風はロッドハンド側にぶつかってくる超厄介なのが多くて、毎秒10m前後の風の中、重いフライをバックハンドで10番ロッドをフルスイングしなきゃならない。結果は、全日を通して射程距離内に入ってくるパーミットにショットしたのは2回のみ、トレバリーも同様。一発は食わせたけど、スッポ抜けた。あの天候では魚が近くに来ていてもその大半が曇天と波と風雨で見えていない状況が多かったはずだ。ひたすら攻め続けたが無念にも本日の最終日を終えてしまった。勿論、リベンジに戻るつもりだ。

でも、今回の全工程を天候のために台無しにしたのかと言うと、そんなことはない。松本さんのガイドで経験することができた日本のフラッツは私の想像を越えて素晴らしく、フラッツはいくつかの顔を持っていた。そして、自分のフラッツフィッシングを大いに進化させるいくつかの発見をした旅だった。

一つは、重く空気抵抗の大きいフライを暴風の中でキャストするポイントを掴んだ事。もう一つの大きい発見は、長年拒み続けて来た“ある事”に、ついに妥協した時に生まれた産物だった。“ある事”とは、フラッツでラインバスケットとかトレイを使うと言うこと。自分の家にはラインバスケットは２つあるけど、そいつらは埃を被っている。使われている方、語弊がある言い方でごめんなさい！私はお腹周りにバケツをぶら下げたあの格好は、見た目がダサ過ぎるから自分は絶対願い下げだ！と思ってフライ人生を過ごして来た。取り分けカッコよさの美学が重要な要素であるフラッツフィッシングにおいては。しかしながら、今回の暴風雨の中で、ラインマネジメントに相当気をつけても足下に垂らしたラインのコイルが交差する状況が連発していたので、3日目にとうとう松本さんに「あのEasy Shrimp社のライントレイ、使わせていただけませんか？」と心を鬼にしてお願いしてしまった。

結果は、嵐の中の青天の霹靂！　このライントレイを使ってみたところ、フラッツフィッシングにおいては、ライントレイが革命的に有効であるポイントに気づいてしまったのだ。因みに私は、フライフィッシングを生業にしていないので、販売元からは何の便宜も受けておりません！良いモノは、ニュートラルな目で純粋に評価して紹介したい、が真意です！で、Easy Shrimp社のライントレイ（メーカーはラインマスターと呼んでいる）を使うと得られるものは何かと言うと:

  1. まずライントレイを使うとトレイを使わない場合に比べ、キャスティングのアキュラシーが飛躍的に上がる。何故かと言うと潮の流れが早い時ほど、リトリーブしたラインは慎重にハンドコイルを作りながら足下に垂らすのだけど、そのループが水離れする時の抵抗はことの他大きく、プレゼンテーション時の距離感の精度はかなり狂わされる。ピンポイントに静かにフライを落としたいパーミット、ボーンフィッシュでは致命的な問題だ。しかし、このライントレイでフラッツでのアキュラシーはかなり改善される。
  2. アキュラシーの問題と同等に大きい問題が、シュートする時のラインの水離れ時におこるノイズ。そのノイズのためにパーミット、ボーンフィッシュの場合、15m先のターゲットフィッシュに警戒心を持たれている可能性は結構あると思った方がいい。でもこの問題も解決される。因みにパーミット、ボーンフィッシュのフラッツフィッシングでキャストする最頻度の距離は通常12-15Mほどで、ロングキャストを狙うと成功のチャンスは減ることが多い。ボーンフィッシュは、足元のリーフのかけらをガリッと踏んだだけで、20M先のターゲットフィッシュが脱刀の勢いで逃げるのは日常茶飯事にあることだ。
  3. 水離れの抵抗がないと言うことは、ロングキャストが容易になることでもある。上述のようにフラッツでは基本的にロングキャストの必要性は低いが、向かい風では大いに助けになる。
  4. ライントレイからシューティングする場合は、フォルスキャストの回数を一回以上減らせられる。効率性の高いキャストは単に美しいだけでなく、高速で移動するターゲットフィッシュを追うフラッツでは強力な武器となる。 FFI (Fly Fishing International) ではフラッツでのクイックキャストのテクニックは昨今かなり重要視されていて、このテクニックをSWQC (ソルトウォーター・クイックキャスト) と言う括りで別枠に扱っている。
  5. フラッツ内で次のスポットに移動する時って、往々にして移動中にラインが交差して絡みの要素を作っていることに気づいていないことが多いのだけど、その問題が解決される。

と言う事で、プラス要素は計り知れないほどあり、これらを折り畳み式ポータブルデバイスでできてしまう。フラッツフィッシングに精通しているフライフィッシャーでも、ライントレイなしのハンドライン マネージメントだけでは拾いきれないフライフィッシャーの弱みを克服してくれる、が私の印象。OLURICAの松本さんは、このライントレイの代理店でもあるので、今回釣りをしている間に彼に直ぐに注文を入れた。私は２週間後には、ボーンフィッシュのトリップに出るのだけど、そこでアメリカの友人達がEasy Shrimp社のライントレイ見てどう反応するのかを見るのが楽しみだ。

I’ve caught Permit overseas before, but Japan remained uncharted waters for me.
Determined to land one on my home turf, I set my sights on the Okinawa Islands, knocking on its door with the invaluable support of Toshiyuki from OLURICA. My mission? Catching Permit. Simple!

But, what greeted me, however, was nothing short of the most brutal weather I’ve ever faced on the flats. Each day unleashed furious storms, with rain hammering down in sheets and relentless gusts slamming against my rod hand. Imagine trying to backhand cast a dumbbell-eye fly with a 10-weight rod in 15–22 mph crosswinds — it was like fighting the sea itself.

Despite every ounce of focus and determination, I only managed two shots at Permit — and one fleeting hookup — across the entire trip. Even when fish were close, the combination of low visibility, waves, and driving rain turned the flats into a game of blind chess. By the final day, battered but unbowed, I was forced to admit defeat — for now. But I will be back soon.

However, was the entire expedition ruined? Absolutely not.
Under Toshiyuki’s expert guidance, I glimpsed a Japanese flats fishery more beautiful and richer than I had ever imagined. And importantly, I made discoveries that evolved my approach to flats fishing in ways I hadn’t imagined before.

One key breakthrough was learning to punch heavy, wind-resistant dumbbell-eye patterns into brutal gusts.
Another — perhaps even more impactful — came when I broke one of my longest-standing personal taboos. Until now, I had refused to use the Line Baskets or Trays.
Yes, I own two Line Baskets — gathering dust. But the idea of strapping a plastic bucket around my waist? It felt like sacrilege in the image-conscious world of flats fly fishing.
Presentation and aesthetics, after all, are not minor matters on the flats.

Yet, reality has a way of humbling pride.
On the third day, after battling endless tangled coils at my feet in the storm, I finally turned to Toshiyuki and asked, “Could I please borrow your Easy Shrimp Line Tray?” 

The result was a revelation — a lightning bolt in the storm. Using the Line Tray, I discovered transformative advantages on the flats:

  1. Unmatched Casting Accuracy.
    Without coils dragging in water, my distance accuracy control and pinpoint presentations improved dramatically — essential for spooky species like Permit and bonefish.
  2. Silent Line Shooting.
    No noisy “rip” as line released from water —no more alerting fish 50ft away. That said, even this can be worked around. In flats fishing for permit and bonefish, the sweet spot for casting is typically just 40 to 50ft. Push it too far and your chances start slipping away. Bonefish are spooky—step on a bit of broken coral near your boots, and it’s not unusual for a fish 65ft out to vanish like smoke.
  3. Effortless Long Casts into Headwinds.
    While flats fishing rarely demands distance casting, it can be very helpful when casting into a headwind.
  4. Fewer False Casts.
    You can reduce at least one false cast before shooting line. Efficiency isn’t just elegant—it’s totally an effective weapon when targeting fast moving fish. This advantage is so critical on the flats and aligns perfectly with modern quick-casting techniques like SWQC (Saltwater Quick Cast) promoted by FFI (Fly Fishing International).
  5. Tangle-Free When Wading Between the Spots.
    Wading between spots without noticing line crossing underfoot is a silent killer of opportunities. The Line Tray eliminates this issue.

The cumulative effect? Enormous.

Even highly experienced flats fly fishers, relying on traditional line management techniques, may unknowingly handicap their chances. For me, the Line Tray was a genuine game-changer.

I immediately ordered my own from Toshiyuki who is also a distributor for Easy Shrimp.
I’ll be testing it again in two weeks on my next bonefish fishing trip – I’m excited to see how it performs under different conditions and how my American friends react to it.
